Botanical Description

Quercus robur, also known as the Pedunculate or English Oak, is a large deciduous tree native to much of Europe and western Asia, including Britain and Ireland. In wild and semi-natural settings, it is characteristic of lowland woodlands, hedgerows, wood pasture, parkland, and ancient forests.

In open fields and parkland, the Pedunculate Oak often develops its most characteristic form: a broad, weighty crown, a substantial trunk, and great limbs that spread outward before rising into rounded masses of summer foliage. In woodland it can form a taller, straighter trunk with a higher canopy. Mature trees commonly reach around 20–40 metres and develop coarse, fissured bark, deeply cut leaves with rounded lobes, and acorns borne on long stalks known as peduncles.

Few European trees carry the same cultural and visual weight. Long associated with endurance, shelter, age, and continuity, the oak is a familiar presence in myth, legend, historic landscapes, ancient boundaries, and traditional parkland. Individual trees can live for many centuries, with exceptional specimens reaching up to around 1,000 years. These ancient oaks, with hollowing trunks, broken limbs, and the rich wildlife they support, are among the most evocative features of mature temperate landscapes.

Photogrammetry capture for production foliage

Viridius captures foliage in the field and turns it into production assets: photogrammetry of whole trees and branch clusters, colour-managed under controlled light, then cleaned, retopologised and textured for real-time and offline rendering.

Every pack in the library is scanned, built and checked the same way, so a beech from one season sits beside an oak from another without a seam. The studio works with production teams directly on species they need next.
